Billiard TableBig East Football: A Big Folly?

Billiard TableBig East Football : A Big Folly? - The Big East Football Conference is in the midst of experiencing its biggest changes since its founding in 1991. Gone are perennial powers Miami, Virginia Tech, and Boston College as well as league doormat, Temple. New to the conference are Louisville, Cincinnati, and South Florida.  Some are calling the changes one big folly; while others believe that the conference will shake off its losses and move forward stronger and wiser. Three letters have hurt the Big East Conference over the past few years. They are: A-C-C. ACC, as in Atlantic Coast Conference, who lured and then persuaded three Big East schools to make the leap over to the ACC. For the Big East, the three schools represented the league s top football powers as well as two high performing Men s Basketball squads: Boston College and Miami. In this age of lucrative television contracts and super conferences the three defecting schools took the money and ran. Purists were left...

Which is the Best Pool Table?

Which is the Best Pool Table? - Billiard tables are a pretty important subject when it comes to the game of pool. I have played on too many pool tables to count. I have played on brand new tables as well as used ones. New or used tables play pretty much the same. It is the felt that makes the difference. I love playing on a table with a brand new cloth. (preferably Simonis 860) A nice level table with Simonis 860 cloth will play pretty fast. You don’t have to hit the ball very hard to send it around four rails. Most major tournaments use this cloth and it is good to be used to it. As for the best brands of tables, I would have to say that Brunswick is pretty high up on the list. I love playing on a 9 foot Brunswick Gold Crown with some nice new felt on it. My next pick and it is really a toss up with the Brunswick is a Diamond table. We have Diamond bar tables in the tavern where I play league. These tables play great. I personally own a Valley seven foot bar table. This is also a ver...

Billiard Table

Billiard Table - A billiards table is a table on which you play billiards or simply pool. Regulation billiard tables or Pool are exact rectangles and has the playing surface that measures at least ten by five feet. You may see other tables that are smaller or bigger, but the standard table is ten feet long and five feet wide. When you play pool you will play games like eight ball, nine ball, one pocket, and so on. The name will usually imply the rules of the game. Like with eight ball, you don t want to sink the ball until all of your colors have been hit in a pocket. If you sink the eight ball before your ready, you automatically lose the game. When it comes to the pockets of the table, you will notice that there are six pockets. You have four corner pockets and two side pockets (one on each side). You may find that pool tables aren t prefect rectangles, but come in many shapes. They are not the standard table and are custom made. You will also notice that the table as rails or cushi...

Billiard Gloves: To wear them or not to wear them

Billiard Gloves : To wear them or not to wear them - Billiard gloves are a pretty popular item in the billiard supplies department. I have owned a couple different brands in the 20 plus years of playing pool and billiard games. I normally do not wear gloves when I play unless I am having a challenge with my bridge hand sticking to the pool cue. You will find quite a few players wearing billiard gloves in the pool leagues. I have noticed they are more common with new players or beginners. You will even find a few of the pro players wearing gloves if you watch pool on television. There are 2 main reasons for wearing gloves while playing pool. The first is to eliminate your hand sticking to the cue and dragging down your stroke. The second is to help keep your hand from turning colors from the billiards chalk on the pool table. There are several types of billiard gloves to choose from. I have included a link where you can find a variety of gloves on sale now. Find Billiard Gloves Here I h...

Billiard Cues. Do you own a custom pool cue?

Billiard Cues. Do you own a custom pool cue ? - Billiard cues can be a challenging subject when it comes to deciding which one to buy. Your pool cue is a big part of your game. It drives me nuts when I forget my cue on pool league night (rarely) and have to shoot with one of my team mates cues. Don’t get me wrong they all have nice cues. Shooting with billiard cues other than your own can affect your game. I currently shoot with a Joss East. Before that I was using A KC Custom Cue which was modified by our local cue maker. I now use the KC as a break cue. I shot with a Meucci for about 17 years before that. My Meucci is now only for looks. (for a while) Two of my team mates have predator cues or at least they have a predator shaft on their pool cues. These cues make the ball spin much different than the cues I normally play with. When trying to step up cold and shoot with one of these my cue ball control is a little unpredictable. I know these cues work well when you are used to them. ...

Billiard Balls are not all created equal.

Billiard Balls are not all created equal . - First a little history about billiard balls.  According to the article on Wikipedia, the earliest balls were made of wood, and later clay (the latter remaining in use well into the 20th century).   Ivory was used for a period, but by the mid-1800’s, elephants were being slaughtered for their ivory at an alarming rate, just to keep up with the demand for billiard balls. No more than eight balls could be made from a single elephant.   Inventors were challenged to come up with an alternative material that could be used to manufacture billiard balls. In 1869 a composition material called cellulose nitrate was used for billiard balls. (US patent 50359, the first American patent for billiard balls). By 1870 it was commercially branded celluloid, the first industrial plastic. The nature of celluloid made it volatile in production, occasionally exploding, which ultimately made this first plastic impractical. Imagine that, Exp...
